CRCRC WRL Round 3 of 6

The third round of the CRCRC Winter Racing League (WRL) went down on Saturday December 17th. The holiday kept entries down a little compared to the first two rounds, but with 100 entries and some great racers there was still plenty of competition. Once again, 2wd Buggy was the largest class with three heats of racing. All other classes had two heats each. 1/8th buggy, stadium truck, and 4wd buggy had their largest showings in the series to date!
The track layout was modified from the Round 2 layout. The layout featured lots of elevation changes with lots of places to pick up speed, but only a few places to pass clean. This rewarded good qualifying and patience.

With some really close points battles in most classes, this round was important for some to solidify their positions and for others to stake their claim to lead positions. With up to three drops, there is still a chance for new racers to join the series and compete for the wins. The last race of the six race series can be counted twice.

After three rounds of qualifying, the TQ's for each class included the following:

Chad Pendlton - TQ 2wd Buggy Losi 22

Eric Clark - TQ Stadium Truck Losi 22T

Jeff Switzer - TQ 4wd Buggy -AE B44

Rodney Black - TQ Pro2 SCT - Kyosho SCR

Ian Cameron - TQ Pro4 SCT - Losi SCTE

Joe Bornhurst - TQ 1/8th E-Buggy - Losi 8E

2wd Buggy

Tight racing on this track meant one mistake and you were shuffled to the back. Dax Madden and Chad Pendleton were able to keep their Losi 22's clean to the win and second place. Dan Griffin (AE), Eric Clark (Losi), and Curt May (Losi) charged late to take third through fifth separated only 7 seconds from the winner. In the points, the win moved Dax Madded up to third, but the top spot was still held by JP Richards (absent from this race) by 1 point over Curt May. Lots of racers are still in this points battle!

Stadium Truck
In Stadium Truck, Eric Clark created a buzz with the new (yet to be released) Losi 22T. He took the TQ and was rolling to a comfortable win in the main when he got into some mixups with backmarkers and eventually some mechanical problems. That let Jeff Switzer (AE) take the win followed closely by Rodney Black (Kyosho)

4wd Buggy
Jeff Switzer TQ'd round 3 again and this time was able to hold on for the win. Paul Sinclair in his X-factory prototype took second with Joel White and his Durango in third.

Pro2 SCT
TQ Rodney Black lost the lead early and broke after flipping on a tube. Keith Porter took the lead early and went on to a fairly comfortable win. Bob Operman, Keith Laymon and Mark Stanley finished out second through fourth separated by less than half a second between the three.

Pro4 SCT
As usual, this was a close battle between Steve Weber, Ian Cameron, Louie Weber, and Kwang Kim. Steve managed to get it into the front and stay there for the win. A close race for second between Ian and Louie finished out the podium. Steve moved into the leader position in the series with this win, though it is still anyone's to win overall.

1/8th EBuggy

TQ Joe Bornhurst took his Losi 8 to an early lead that he stretched for a while and took in cruise control to the win. The real battle was between Ian Cameron, Kwang Kim, Porkchop, Louie Weber, and Steve Weber for second place. In the end, that was the finishing order. Series Ian Cameron managed second after sweeping the first two rounds and will keep the series lead going into round 4.

CRCRC Winter Racing League Round 2 of 6

Round 2 of the well attended CRCRC Winter Racing League (WRL) was held on November 19, 2011. The WRL is a six race series held at CRCRC over the course of the winter season, approximately one race a month. Races are all held on Saturday so racers from all over Ohio and surrounding states can attend. This second round featured 122 entries including four heats of 2wd open buggy and three heats each of Pro2 and Pro4 SCT. In addition, full heats of 1/8th buggy, stadium truck, and 4wd buggy were in attendance. There was also a kids 12 and under class. Read on for results, pictures and A-main Videos! The layout was changed the week prior to this event and was fresh for all. Steve King put in the layout that was finished off by the CRCRC club (thanks Steve!). The layout featured a bowl chicaine, some fast sections and some nice jump sections.

The pits were nearly full and kept cozy. A new wall between the pits and the track allows the pits to be maintained plenty warm while still offering a nice view of the track for onlookers. If you haven't been to CRCRC lately, you have missed out on some really great racing, in a great facility, and on a great track.

Qualifying

As usual, qualifying was held in 3 rounds of rocket round format. Racers who placed in the top 10 in round were provided number plates to signify their standing in the series ranks...this practice will continue throughout the series.

After qualifying had settled, the following racers found themselves in the coveted TQ positions:

Kids 12 and Under

In the 12 and under class it was local up and comer Nathan Clark taking the TQ position to the win with his Losi SCT.  The Heckert clan followed with Spencer, Stephen, and Caroline.   Overall in the points, Nathan maintained the top spot with Tyler Banton second and Caroline Heckert third. For the second round points calculations, one drop was assumed, and tie breakers are first who finished highest (if in the same round) and second who obtained the score first. Thus, racers who had best score in round 1 are listed higher than equal scores in round 2.

Open Stadium Truck

A full heat of stadium truck is a good sign. It will be interesting to see if this class takes off again once the Losi 22T arrives at the hobby shops! In this one, Jeff Switzer (AE) took the TQ position to the win, but not with out pressure from young gun Nathan "The Hammer" Clark (Losi). Third place was held by Nathans dad Jeff Clark (Losi). In the series, Switzer solidified his lead with wins in both round 1 and round 2 with Nathan taking a close second in both. Bart McLane is tied with Jeff Clark for third place (assume 1 drop) with the tie breaker going to Bart.

2wd Open Buggy

In this class with four heats of qualifying and D-mains, Curt May (Losi) took the win after TQ Brandon Marsh (AE) ran into trouble about midway through the race. JP Richards (Losi) and Dax Madden (Losi) rounded out the podium spots and obtaining a sweep for the Losi 22 buggy. Of special note is Dax who broke the buggy on the last lap of practice before the race and was able to take a loaner vehcile to third place in this very competitive main! As usual, I managed to turn a top 5 qualifying position into a poor showing in the main.

In the points race, a total of 52 racers have now logged in a score in 2wd open buggy class th rough the first two rounds. Assuming 1 drop, round 1 TQ and winner JP Richards maintains the top spot followed by round 2 winner Curt May, and Paul Sinclair (X-factory). Paul could not make the second race due to a conflict, but still holds on to the third position.

2wd Buggy A-main

4wd Buggy

A good showing in the 4wd buggy class saw Jeff Switzer (AE) take the TQ to a comfortable lead before thermaling with a few laps to go. The very very slow marshal (aka me) eventually found the secret hidden switch to cycle power on Switzers car, but by that time both Joel White (Durango) and Henry Nerida (Kyosho) had passed Switzer with White taking the win. Round 1 winner Nathan Clark ended up in fourth.

In the points, Nathan Clark holds the tie breaker for first over second place Joel While. DC Smith rounds out the top three wtih a tie breaker over Henry Nerida.

Pro2 SCT

In Pro 2 SCT, TQ Dustin Richards (Losi), Rodney Black (Kyosho), and Bill Shay (Losi) were able to pull away from the field, with Richards and Black running very close similarly to round 1. Black was able to put a clean pass on Richards. One mistake by each later allowed the other around as Black took the win followed by Richards and Shay.

In the points, Richards held on to the top spot followed by Black and Keith Porter (Kyosho).

Pro2 SCT A-main

Pro4 SCT

Unlike round 1 that was dominated by Losi trucks other than the top spot going to Durango, Round two was just mostly dominated by Losi trucks including the TQ spot. This time there were two Durangos and one AE truck in the A-main. The top four drivers battled closely for the first half of the race in an amazing display (I recommend watching the video). While Frank Dietz (Losi) was out there with the fastest laps in the main, he ran into trouble allowing Ian Cameron (Losi), Kwang Kim (Losi) and round 1 winner Louie Weber (Durango) to battle it out fo the lead. In the end, it was Cameron who was able to keep it clean and pull away from the fierce battle. Kim and Weber finished less than a second apart for second. ...and my AE truck is still in the dog house.

Pro4 SCT A-main

1/8th Electric Buggy

A full heat of electric buggy made for some good racing. I am hopeful we'll see two heats of this class at the Round 3 race. TQ and round 1 winner Ian Cameron (Losi) received a big challenge from Louie Weber before Weber fell victim to mechanical troubles. That allowed Cameron to take his second win in the series followed by Steve Weber (Losi) and Joe Bornhurst (AE).

In the series, Cameron has a commanding two race TQ and win followed by Chad Wallace (Mugen) and Steve Weber.

1/8th E-buggy A-main

Thanks to all the racers that made this one of my favorite races of the year. I am thankful to all of you for continuing to support this series and I hope to see you back for the later rounds. If you haven't had a chance to compete in this series, you still have plenty of opportunity. CRCRC WRL Round 1

Introduction

The first round of the CRCRC Winter Racing League (WRL) was held Saturday October 15, 2011. This series will feature one race at CRCRC every month between October and April except January (the CRCRC club is busy that month with the CRCRC Winter Midwest Race). Racers from across Ohio and surrounding states were in attendance totaling 118 entries for this inagural event. That total featured 40 2wd Buggy entries, 27 Pro2 SCT entries, and 26 Pro4 entries as the biggest classes. The series also runs stadium truck, 4wd Buggy, and 1/8th electric buggy as well as a kids 12 and under SCT class. Series winners will be determined from the best four races, and the final race may be used for double points allowing up to three races to be dropped from the series. Therefore, even those that did not make it to this first race still have ample opportunity to compete in this series.

This series is sponsored by Grandview Hobbies, B-fast, and Trick Graphics...with more to come. Grandview Hobbies is a local hobby shop that caters to the racers. Racing started at 1PM to allow plenty of time for arrival for those traveling. In retrospect, it ended up being a little "too much" practice and will probably be pulled back to noon for subsequent races. Still, the program went fairly smooth and racing was over before 10:30 PM.

The Track
The track layout was modified the week before this race to level the playing field as much as possible. Some of the key features still remained, but most of the racing lines were changed. In all of my business this race day, I forgot to take a nice track pic...here are some camera phone pics from before the race.

2wd Buggy
2wd buggy was arguably the most competitive class with 40 entries and some excellent drivers throughout. In the first round, JP Richards was able to throw down an amazing 16 lap run, which held on throughout the day. Several racers came close to topping it in the last heat, but JP held on for the TQ position with his Losi 22 buggy.

In the A-main, all racers got out cleanly. JP was on once again pulling away from the field early. The real battle was between Curt May (Losi 22) and Paul Sinclair (X-Factory X-6 squared) for second position. Those two battled for the entire race with Curt taking over 2nd near the end. In the B-main, Brandon Marsh and Dan Griffin battled the entire race with their AE B4.1's turning laps that could have put them in podium spots in the A-main. Unfortunately, some unfortunate qualifying luck left them out of "the show". A mistake by Dan allowed Brandon to take the B-main win. Bill Shay (Losi 22) took home the final podium spot in the B-main.

In the C-main, "Skinner" moved from 10th overall to take the win with his X-factory X-6 squared. Joe McCoy (AE B4.1) took second and Jay Stiffler (Losi) fell to third.

In the D-main, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd qualifiers inverted their positions in the main. John Gilbert (Trick Graphics, Kyosho RB5 SP) laid down a very nice run putting over a lap on the field after stuggling with bad luck in qualifying. "Porkchop" (Losi 22) took home second and Mark Stanley (AE B4) took home third.

Racers with the colored positions (top 10) will get a similarly colored WRL number decal to run on their buggies for Round 2 to indicate their positions as current points leaders.

Stadium Truck

The stadium truck class had 8 entries with Jeff Switzer taking the TQ position (sorry Jeff I didn't get a picture). This class is sort of a class in waiting as the anticipated Losi 22T is expected to come out in the coming months. Jeff Switzer took the A-main win with is AE T4 followed by young gun Nathan "The Hammer" Clark (Losi), and Bart McLane (AE).

12 and Under SCT

The 12 and Under SCT class had three entries. Nathan Clark took TQ and the win followed by Tyler Banton and Caroline Heckert. I think all these racers had a good time running this race and I hope to see more young racers out for the coming races. 12 and Under racers enter for a "second class" entry fee if they sign up with a parents entry in another class.

4wd Buggy

In 4wd Buggy, X-Factory team manager Paul Sinclair (X-Factory X-7 prototype) overtook Dan Griffin (AE B44.1) for the TQ spot in qualifying. In the main it was back and forth between Dan and Paul, with each having mechanical (or electricial) difficulties taking them out of the race. In the end, Nathan Clark (B44) drove smooth and fast to edge out DC Smith (Durango) for the top spot with Joel White (Durango) taking third.

Of special note was the appearance of the anticipated X-Factory X-7 4wd buggy. Paul Sinclair has been working on this car for some time and seems to be getting close to a final prototype. It certainly looked good on the track.

Pro2 SCT

In the second largest class, Pro2 SCT saw Dustin Richards (AE SC10) take over the TQ from Rodney Black (Kyosho SC-R) in the third round of qualifying. In the main, Dustin and Rodney traded the lead several times and were never farther than a couple seconds apart. Keith Porter (Kyosho SC-R) hung in there making a late run just a second behind the leaders to capture third. Rodney gave up the lead late with a bobble over the triple double allowing Dustin to take the win by less than a second. As part of that race, I have to say it was a great time. Thanks to John Gilbert for shooting the video. A technical problem occured so the first 3 minutes of the race are not shown in the video. This main video is worth a watch.

In the B-main, Luke Richards (Losi XXX-SCT) rolled nearly lapping the entire field. Luke was one of the fastest all day, but technical problems prevented him from finishing a run in qualifying. In the main, he borrowed his brothers SC10 which held up for the win with a run that could have put him on the podium in the A-main. Todd Brown (Losi XXX-SCT) and Brian Wallace (AE SC10) battled close for second and third place respectively.

In the C-main it was again John Gilbert who had mechanical troubles in qualifying and who rolled to the win in his Kyosho SC-R. Jesse Cline (AE SC10) and Bart McLane (AE SC10) finished second and third respectively.

Pro4 SCT

In Pro4 SCT, Steve Weber decided to run the Losi SCTE this week and wheeled it to a convincing 16 lap TQ. In the A-main, Steve was overtaken by his brother Louie Weber (Durango), which was the only non Losi SCTE in the A-main. Louie, Steve, and Ian Cameron (Losi) had an early breakout. Louie maintained a short but solid lead throughout for the win. Steve and Ian battled closely behind Louie, which helped Louie maintain his lead. In the end, Steve won that battle taking second place and Ian third. This main video is worth a watch.

In the B-main CRCRC Friday night race director Timmy rolled to the win with his Losi. Bob Eldgridge had the highest finishing AE 4x4 in second. Brandon Burns, also with the AE, took third.

In the C-main, Brian Beckholt took his Traxxas to the early lead and held on to that for some time. Scott Stoffer (AE), Jim Ronevich (Losi), and others battled for second. However some late race difficulties set Backholt back and allowed him to be over taken by Stoffer for first, Ronevich for second, and Subasic (OFNA) for third.

The E-scale class saw Ian Cameron (Losi) take the TQ position wire to wire to the win. Chad Wallace, Steve Weber, and Kwang Kim battled for second and third with Wallace (Mugen) besting Weber and Kim for Second. Weber (Losi) held on for Third.

After race 2, the leaders will be determined by best single points finish. If you did not make the first race, you still have good opportunity to sort a number decal for the third race and be in strong contention for the series win wtih 2 or 3 drops available (3 if the last race is attended and that score is used).

2011 OEOSS Final Race at CRCRC

Last Saturday saw the final race in the five race Ohio Electric Offroad Summer Series. With awards still up for grabs it promised to be an interesting race day. The race had about 70 entries and a track layout that was great for racing.

After three rounds of qualifying, the TQs for each class were JP Richards (2wd Buggy), Daniel Hall (Stadium Truck), Rodney Black (Pro2 and Pro4 SCT), and Steve Weber (E-scale).

2wd Buggy

With an excellent field, the 2wd buggy race started out a little rough with two mix ups on the first lap which shuffled most of the field. JP Richards took back over the lead at the end of the first lap and traded the lead with his brother Dustin several times. On the last lap JP leading got sideways on the smallest, but trickiest jump on the track letting Dustin around for the win. Curt May took the third spot. Points leader Skinner slipped to seventh in the race, but was still enough to take the series win.

A small field in stadium truck included points leader Bart McLane. Daniel Hall took the TQ position to the win after some early mistakes by Ron Waugh.

2wd SCT class had all of the points leaders participating in this race. In the end, it was points leader Rodney Black with the win, with Keith Porter in second and Brian McDonald in third.

The points standings ended up with Rodney Black in 1st, Keith Porter in 2nd, and Scott Kuchler in 3rd.

Pro4 SCT

4wd SCT was the biggest class of the day and included all of the points contenders for the series. Points leader Josh Howell had some trouble in qualifying making it interesting as second place in points, Rodney Black managed to take the TQ in the third round of qualifying. However in the main Rodney took a tumble on the first jump series. Jeff Switzer and Ian Cameron pulled away from the field with Kwang Kim not far behind. After trading the lead Jeff Switzer broke out allowing Ian and Kwang to fight it out. It came down to the last lap where Kwang tried to fly the pit. Ian however was able to maintain the lead and the win.

A-main

C-main

In the series Josh Howell held on for 1st place. After initial calculation it looked like Rodney Black took 2nd and Ian Cameron took 3rd; however after subsequent review it looks like Ian actually took 2nd with the win at the final. It should be noted that Ian Cameron ran most of the series including practice at the final with a Traxxas Slash. A day before the race he upgraded to a Losi SCTE, but did not have enough time on it to race. A last minute change of heart had him throw it down for qualifying where he ended up taking third qualifying spot and the race win! Nice job.

E-Scale

This race also included an exhibition 1/8th electric buggy class. Exhibition in that it was not normally included in the series. Steve Weber took the TQ and race win, but not without close compeitition from Ian Cameron. This class will be included in the upcoming CRCRC Winter Racing League (WRL) which starts in a few weeks (October 15th).

OEOSS Round 4 Dirt Hills in Marion, Ohio

Round four of the Ohio Electric Offroad Summer Series (OEOSS) was held at Dirt Hills Raceway in Marion, Ohio. Racers always look forward to attending a race at this impecably maintained circuit operated by Don Goins. Though rain threatened in the forecast, the weather turned out beautiful and sunny all day long.

Racing started at about noon with all classes being well represented. The largest class for this event was the 4x4 SCT class, which is always popular at Dirt Hills. In addition to the "locals" several groups traveld to this event from Columbus, Pittsburgh, and the Medina area. With some great compeitition, it was sure to be a good race.

Don blew off the track and watered in between each round, which meant the buggy class got the best traction, and maybe a little mud. By the time 4x4 SCT was up, the track was dry and really perfect for slinging those beasts around.

Qualifying was three rounds and the TQ's in each class were as follows.

2wd Buggy TQ was Brian Handwork, who is running X-Factory

Truck TQ was Nathan ("The Hammer") Clark, who had his Losi XXX-TCR running fast after taking most of the summer off for baseball.

2wd Stock SCT TQ was Bart McLane, who has been doing well in the class in the series with his SC10

2wd and 4x4 Open SCT TQ's were taken by Rodney Black with the Kyosho SC-R and AE SC10 4x4

2wd Buggy

With several of the series usuals competing at the ROAR nats this weekend, buggy turn out was somewhat low. The 2wd Buggy class however, was dominated by X-Factory vehicles with half of the field running the X-6^2. Brian Handwork took his TQ spot to the win, with Skinner giving a good run at it. Both drivers were running the X-factory. Third and fourth was Chad Wallace and Joe McCoy both with the AE B4.

2wd Truck

2wd Truck class was competitive all day in qualifying. Eventually Nathan Clark took the TQ and drove clean to lap the field in the main.

2wd Stock SCT
Bart in the TQ position did not count the first lap, but did take the win by a few seconds over Jerry Bowling. I thought I had video of this race, but it didn't make it to my computer. Sorry guys.

2wd Open SCT
Don Goins (AE SC10) put a lot of pressure on TQ Rodney Black (Kyosho SC-R) for the first half of the race. After going through some lapped traffic, Rodney managed to put a little distance between and take the win. Don took second with Scott Kuchler (SC10) in third. In the B, Joel White took his Kyosho SC-R to the win.

4x4 SCT

4x4 SCT was the most hotly contested class all day. Rodney Black took the TQ, but only by a split second over Rod Schumann and a couple seconds in front of Don Goins. The top three spots after qualifying were held by AE SC10 4x4's, but the Losi SCTE drivers were hungry in the main. After a horrendous start over the quad which put several of the leaders into the back, the field was completely shuffled. Chad Wallace was fast all day in his Losi SCTE and took a clean break all the way to the victory. Josh Howell also in a Losi SCTE gave hard chase and put some pressure on him. Rodney Black fought back from last after the first jump to come close to the leader along with Josh in the last lap, but could not overtake Wallace.
Skinner took his newly acquired AE SC10 4x4 to the B-main win and Crystal Eldridge took her Slash 4x4 to the win in the C-main.

OEOSS Rnd 3 Roadrunner in Newark, OH

Saturday July 16th was the third round of the Ohio Electric Offroad Summer Series, this time held at Roadrunner RC Raceway in Newark, Ohio. This track is located on top of a hill in a public park and is definately a different experience than all the other tracks in the series. Many say this is a real outdoor off road experience with loose dirt and lots of bumps making it challenging for the drivers. The track is shown below.

In the Mod buggy class a few racers had to leave early leaving a limited field. Jason Engle backed up his Round 2 win by running away with the TQ in Round 3. Sorry, I don't have the results for buggy.

In Stadium truck class, it was the local drivers that ruled the day. Bud took TQ honors, but Luke Boone cruised to a victory in the main.

In stock 2wd SCT, Bart McLane once again took home TQ honors and the win.

In Mod 2wd SCT, Rodney Black took the TQ and the win.

In 4x4 SCT, Josh Howell took the TQ and cruised to the victory.

2011 OEOSS Round 2 at CCRCR

Round 2 of the Ohio Electric Offroad Summer Series (OEOSS) was held at Clinton County RC Raceway (CCRCR) last Saturday. There was a fairly good turnout especially considering few other big races in the area, the SCT Jamboree the weekend before, and that this track is the farthest south of any of the OEOSS race tracks this year. The track is the largest of the OEOSS tracks this year and was in very good shape for this race. Only a little water was put down to start and the track was swept in between races to form a bit of a groove.

2wd Open SCT

2wd open SCT was by far the largest class of the day with three heats of qualifying and mains. It was a strange day of qualifying with the TQ being broken by several racers in the final round. In the end it was Rodney Black taking the TQ with his Kyosho SC-R.

The A-main had Rodney and JP Richards (Losi XXX-SCT) pull away from the field early. Rodney managed to pull out to a sizable lead 5 minutes into the race before a loose wheel nut left him on the sideline. JP and Ralph Krumme (Losi XXX-SCT) battled for a bit before Ralph pulled ahead and held on for the win with Curt Schlichter taking third (Losi XXX-SCT).

A bit of a light turn out for these two classes with only a handfull of entries in each. Bart McClane was the big winner taking the TQ's and Wins in both classes.

Some close racing in 2wd buggy all day with a field virtually full of Losi 22 buggies, and one or two AE and Kyosho buggies. Jason Engle aka "Butters" took the TQ and win in the class with some consistent and fast driving.

4x4 SCT

The 4x4 SCT class was well attended and competitive, though Ralph Krumme was dominant in qualifying setting the pace in each round and taking the TQ with his OFNA 4x4 SCT.

In the main, an early shake up saw Josh Howell (Losi SCTE) and Steve Weber (Losi SCTE) take to the point and hold it for much of the race. TQ Ralph Krumme fought back to take the lead before falling out due to a battery dump on the last lap. That opened the door back up for Howell who took the lead and win. Krumme held on for second and weber third.

Kyosho Truck/SCT Big Bore Shocks

Got the Kyosho truck Big Bores today. They are exactly the same length as the normal velvet shocks. Here is a comparison of the standard velvet shocks and the big bore shocks.

I'm happy to report that they bolt right on and don't interfere with anything like on the buggy. No updated shock towers or anything like that will be needed. The front shocks are identical to the buggy big bore rears, but there are new springs out for this. You might notice that the coils are spaced out more than the buggy springs. The rear shocks of course are new and have their own set of new springs. They come in Yellow, Orange, and Red (hardest to softest) for front and back.

Here they are bolted to my SC-R. Please excuse the dirt, I haven't had a chance to clean since the last race.

For now, I have the "super hard" Yellow springs on the front (hardest) and the "medium hard" (Red) on the rear, which are the softest. The front feels too stiff on the bench, so I have the "hard" Orange springs in my pit box. I will get a chance to try them out this weekend at the second round of the Ohio Electric Off Road Summer Series. No doubt they will be plush. Also available are new 6 hole pistons for the big bore shocks. I built them with the standard 5 hole pistons to start with.

2011 SCT Jamboree at Dirt Hills Raceway

What a great weekend. The 2nd annual SCT Jamboree at Dirt Hills Raceway was one of, if not the most anticipated SCT race of the summer in Ohio. SCT racers from Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and Pennsylvania were in attendance and the fields were stacked with great racers. Though bad weather threatened and kept some away, the race drew over 120 entries, which mean a long day was in store. Happily, the large storm cloud that approached the venue during round 2 split, dissipated, and gave way to sunshine without letting a drop fall on the Dirt Hills track. I am still suprised it missed us.

The track was the usual Dirt Hills track, fun to drive and well groomed. Track owner Don Goins had things ready to go for the racers. Due to all the rain throughout spring, the track was not as compacted as Don might have liked, but it held up great all weekend...certainly no bumps that any self respecting SCT would get upset on.

Don arranged a good group of sponsors for this race including: Castle, Lizard Skins, DE Racing, Grandview Hobbies, Dad's Toy Shop, Tekin, Trick Graphics, Boca Bearings, Goins Construction and Excavating, and Savox. The grand prize giveaway was a Losi XXX-SCT kit donated by Grandview Hobbies (Thanks Hobby Bob!).

Racing started promptly at 11AM and the last main was finished up around 11:30 PM. Luckily, Don has some nice lights on the track that kept the mains running smooth. 2wd Open SCT and 4x4 classes each went down to E-mains. One bump up was allowed in each of the lower mains so racers that had a bad qualifying day were still not out of it.

In 2wd Open SCT last year's winner Rodney Black was able to secure the TQ over Rudy Johnson with a solid 12 lap run in round 3. The A-main saw Rodney go wire to wire with the lead, but not without having to fend of a fast charging Rod Schumann. The race was in contention up to the final few laps. Schumann secured second and Barry Goodwin wrapped up third.

2wd Stock SCT

There was a great A-main race in 2wd stock between Bryan Boucher, Brian McDonald, David Ellis, and TQ Shawn Vena. Unfortunately, Vena broke out fighting for the lead early in the race. Boucher, McDonald, and Ellis traded spots for a while before Boucher took a solid lead. McDonald and Ellis remained to fight it out for second up through the last few laps.

Kids 12 and Under

About 18 kids entered in the kids 12 and under class, and there was some good racing between these youngsters. TQ Spencer Heckert put in a very solid run to take the win, but not without strong challenges from Levi Goins and Remi W. Great job to all the kids who participated. Every kid went home with a trophy in this one.

4x4 SCT

This class may be becoming the premeire class in SCT racing, much like the full scale counterparts. With the introduction of the Losi and AE trucks, the class is really taking off and had over 40 entries. Both brands were well represented throughout, but it was Jeff Switzer in his Durango who took the TQ away from AE driver Brandon Marsh in the third round. Qualifying ended up Durango, AE, AE, Losi, Losi, and the A-main went Durango, Losi, AE, Losi, AE. What does that mean? Nothing, except that Switzer is fast and all the trucks are competitive...but we already knew that going in. The main was a bit jumbled at the beginning allowing Steve Weber and his Losi truck run away with Switzer and Marsh. Switzer missed some lap counts, but in the end, everyone knew he was the winner despite what the scoring system showed...maybe he needs to look into a capacitor on that truck. Weber came in second and Marsh in third.

2011 OEOSS Round 1 EN Hobbies

Well, winter season is officially over and now racers are looking toward summer racing. Last year was the inagural Ohio Electric Off Road Summer Series (OEOSS), which was a good success. The series is back this year with a few new tracks. This year the series is five races with one drop and started at EN Hobbies on the East side of Columbus. EN is a small-medium sized track in a nice indoor facilty that has been in operation for about a year. The guys at EN put in a new layout for this event and they did a great job.

The best attended classes were the two open SCT classes (2wd and 4wd), with good attendance in the mod buggy class as well. Mod truck and stock SCT were also ran.

Mod truck was dominated by local EN Hobbies racer Trophy Iler. He took the TQ and win in the main. Second place was Jace Layne and third was Bart McLane.

Mod 2wd Buggy

As usual, mod buggy had some really great competition with series usuals like Dan Griffin, JP Richards, Luke Richards, Paul Sinclair, Brandon Marsh, Trophy Iler, and others. JP Richards took the TQ with the new Losi 22 buggy (sorry I didn't get a picture), but had trouble on the first lap of the main. AE driver Dan Griffin took advantage of that and was able to take the win with his B4.1. JP fought back strong for second place, and Trophy Iler broght home third (also with the Losi).

Mod 2WD SCT

In mod 2wd SCT, JP Richards held the early TQ with his Losi SCT, but his brother Luke Richards was able to take it away in the final qualifing heat.

In the Main, JP took out to the lead and Luke broke out. JP held on for the win in his Losi followed by Rodney Black and Keith Porter both driving Kyosho SC-R's.

Mod 4WD SCT

Mod 4wd SCT has really taken off and this was the first real test of Losi vs AE in central Ohio. The big question was, can the newer AE trucks keep up with the established Losi's. Early on in qualifying it was all Losi with most of the resort A-qualifier made up of Losi's. However AE driver Brandon Marsh was able to take the TQ with the AE truck in his first time out with the truck.

The main was comprised of 3 AE, 1 Traxass, and 5 Losi. The Losi trucks looked really strong early with both Bill Shay and Josh Howell taking the early leads. However both trucks ran into mechanical difficulties, which let Brandon get the lead back. He took that opportunity and didn't look back. Steve Weber with his Losi battled with Rodney Black and his AE for second place, with Weber taking 2nd and Black taking 3rd. So Round 1 goes to the AE truck taking TQ, 1st and 3rd; however, with a couple of the top Losi's breaking out, it could easly have gone the other way. It will be interesting to see how it shakes out outdoors when the Losi's can throw their weight around a little more.

Stock SCT

Stock SCT had only a few racers, but they had a great time. Jim R took TQ, but dropped out for the main. The main was a close battle for a while with Nick Richards taking the attrition win.

This was a great turn out for the first race of the series. I am looking forward to round 2 at Clinton County RC Raceway (CCRCR) on Saturday June 25. With a drop allowed, there is still time to get in on the point series, though even if you can't make 4 races this is a great series to come out for one or two races just for the opportunity to race with some great compeition.

2011 CRCRC April Fools Races

Last weekend was the annual CRCRC April Fools Races. Like last year, this year had separate races on Friday night and Sunday afternoon consistent with the typical club schedule at CRCRC. The turnout was great for both events with about 70 entries on Friday night and about 140 entries on Sunday. Many racers turned out for both races.

CRCRC's Annual April Fools Race 2011

2011 CRCRC SCT Shootout

Saturday February 26 was the first CRCRC SCT Shootout. Obviously, this race was only for Shortcourse Trucks (SCT) and included a kids 12 and under class, sportsman 2wd SCT (17.5 motor or standard RTR brushed motor), 2wd Open, and 4x4 Open SCT classes. The race had 89 SCT entries including four heats of 2wd Open SCT, three heats of 4x4 SCT, three heats of sportsman 2wd SCT, and two heats of kids 12 and under. The format was 3 qualifying rounds (rocket round) with 10 minute A-mains and a single bump up from each of the lower mains.

The track was laid down fresh a week before the race so traction was fairly high. Worn in Suburbs, Barcodes, Beams, or Wishbones were seen on most trucks. The track is shown below.

With only a few racers doing multiple classes, 89 entires equated to a lot of bodies and almost all the pit spaces were filled.

Eric Meeks took the TQ in round 3, but got into traffic early. David Perez was able to pull away leaving the rest to battle it out for 2nd and 3rd.

Club Race Sunday Feb 13

Today was the last race on the temporary tube change track that many enjoyed...made for some interesting racing and we hope you liked it. It was only two weeks old, but tomorrow a full track change is going in. New additional dirt is coming and it should be killer.   Tubes were pulled after todays race and it's ready to be torn up tomorrow morning.

Todays race had 7 heats including two heats of buggy, two heats of truck, and two heats of 4WD BUGGY! We also had a heat of SCT.   Racing was great and the track was hooked up.   Several guys were on slicks for most of the day.

Racers from out of town visited and did well with competitive racing from the locals.   In 2wd buggy it was Greg Nicklas, Brad Hackett, and Paul Sinclair battling very closely most of the day with Brad pulling out the TQ. In 4wd Buggy Greg and Brad battled again with almost identical lap times, and Greg took the TQ from Brad in the last heat with very fast 16 lap run. In truck it was Paul and Rodney Black battling closely all day, with Rodney using a clean fast run to pull the TQ from faster Paul in the last heat.   In the mains with racers at the top with close competion, it was about who did not make the fatal mistakes. In the end, Greg took both 2wd buggy and 4wd buggy and Paul took truck.

The 4x4 SCT class has been gaining steam in the midwest lately and was an experimental class this year. With only a few manufacturers to choose from, this was the smallest class in terms of entries. Scotty Ernst took the TQ position to the win in A1 and A2.

2011 CRCRC Midwest Mod 2wd SCT Results

The 2wd open SCT class seems to have arrived with entry totals equaling many of the traditional classes. That was probably helped by factory drivers entering the class including Cavalieri, Maifield, Due, Tebo, and may others. Tebo won A1, but Cavalieri edged him out by a few tenths to take A1. In A2 it was close, but Tebo was able to take the victory with Cavalieri 2nd and Maifield 3rd.

2011 CRCRC Midwest Mod Truck Results

Ryan Cavalieri and Ryan Maifield dominated the mod truck class all weekend. Maifield broke out of A1 giving Cavalieri the fairly easy win. Maifield came storming back in A2 edging out Cavalieri by less than three tenths of a second. In A3 Cavalieri was able to bounce back and pull away for the win.

2011 CRCRC Midwest Electric Champs Mod Buggy

The mod buggy class had nearly 100 entries and Jared Tebo took his TQ position to a win in A1 and A2. Ryan Maifield captured second and Ryan Cavalieri third. Dustin Evans took the new Losi 22 buggy to a third place qualifier, but had to settle for fifth. Local Central Ohio racers Dan Griffin and JP Richards brought home sixth and seventh. Congratulations to all.

Four rounds of qualifying started at 8:15AM on Saturday and stopped midway through the fourth round at about 12:30 AM Sunday morning. The final qualifiers were performed Sunday morning between 8AM and 11:30 AM.

Open Buggy

In Open 2wd Buggy Jared Tebo took his Kyosho RB5 to the TQ spot followed. The final qualifying order was as follows:

4x4 SCT was an experimental class this year and had the smallest number of entries. Many racers strugged with keeping their front ends from digging in too much and flipping the truck. The top qualifying position was taken by Scotty Ernst and other positions are as follows:

Stock 2wd Buggy

New this year was the 17.5 motor rule in stock buggy. As lipo power, motors, and speed controls have improved, it no longer made sense to make 13.5 the "stock" class. Even with 17.5, the top stock buggy guys were still turning laps comparable to many of the open buggies. James Raupp took his TQ Racing buggy to the top qualifier spot. Practice Day 1

A 12 hour practice was held today at the RC Factory in Jeffersonville, Ohio in preparation for the 2011 CRCRC Electric Winter Midwest. When I arrived at 8:30 AM there were already a number of cars on the track. I was a little suprised that the track had not been changed since the warm up race last week. I was told Curt at RC Factory had received enough positive feedback from racers in the past few days that he decided to keep it as is. The track is pictured below.

This pic shows some of the elevation changes. While there were no big jumps, the only truely flat section was the straight and sweeper.

Many of the factory teams were already there preparing. Tebo is walking around on crutches but still managed to get a decent amount of track time thanks to help from his team manager Joe Pillars. He was looking fast in buggy turning laps in the low 21 second range, possibly even some in the 20 second range. He was also running SCT at the end of the night in the mid 22 second range fast lap.

Many of the Team Associated guys showed up later in the evening and only were able to put in a couple packs, so they'll be scrambling tomorrow to get everything ready to go. Luckily the track is not too difficult to learn.

Practice started as open practice but switched to 5 minute 15 racer rotations after 1PM and continued throughout the day. Tomorrow racers should expect the practice to be split between classes with similar rotations within each class. I will try to take some more pics tomorrow, but I'll likely be busy wrenching and practicing most of the day. I'll have more down time on Saturday and Sunday.

The 2011 Midwest Champs are Here

At long last, the 2011 Midwest Champs electric race starts today with a two full days of practice. Word is the factory teams have already started to arrive to check out the track and get set up. The first vehicles will be allowed on the track at 8AM tomorrow for 12 hours of practice. More racers will show up Friday as approximately 380 entries are expected including 350 on line entries and another 30+ that were sent in the old fashioned way. The race has been sold out for several weeks.

That's a lot of mod buggies. The Open SCT class has also seen a huge increase since last year where it was an experimental class. That is likely helped by entries from some of the big name factory drivers no doubt on the hook to make their brand's SCT look reallllly fast. New this year is the use of 17.5 motors in the stock class. The previous two races used 13.5. New batteries and speed controls have just made that too fast for the average stock racer so CRCRC is finally conforming to the ROAR recommendations...somewhat...Speed controls will not be teched so boost is still allowed at this race. In addition, the experimental class this year is the 4x4 SCT class. This class grew quickly around this area over the summer, but has not been as popular indoors. I expected more entries, but it should still be a fun view.

Big news from the track Wednesday evening is that Jared Tebo, defending champion in 2wd buggy, truck, and 4wd buggy, arrived at the track. It was previously reported that Jared was not going to be able to make it due to medical reasons. Glad to hear that he will be there to defend his titles. In other news, Team Associated is bringing a large and outstanding team to this year's electric race including Cavalieri, Maifield, Due, Thielke,and Hartson. It is also rumored that Dustin Evans will be there for Team Losi with the new 22 buggy, though I have not confirmed that. Regardless, this should be an outstanding race for both participants and spectators. Don't forget the race will be broadcast on www.liverc.com
for both the qualifying rounds on Saturday and the mains on Sunday.

2011 Electric MIdwest Champs Warm Up Race

The warm up races for the 2011 CRCRC Midwest Champs was held over the weekend with electric on Saturday and nitro on Sunday. The track layout that Curt S at RC Factory put in is fast and flowing with very little air time. I personally would have liked couple more jumps that require a little timing/downsiding to be fast, but as is the track makes for some very close and exciting racing. There are a few tricky sections, but the track is a quick learn. It does require racers to really push their cars to the limit to be a leader, and that can lead to the occasional wreck. The surface is great and it is extremely fun to race on.

Black Friday Race

It was just a club race, but while others shopped, we raced. We had an excellent turn out with 80 entries including three heats of open buggy and three heats of open truck along with stock SCT, two heats of mod SCT and 4x4 SCT. Here are videos from open buggy, open SCT, and open truck.

Friday November 19 Racer Pics and Video

Good turnouts continue at CRCRC both on Friday night and Sunday for electric racing. Last Friday, we had two full heats of open truck and two full heats of open buggy, plus open 2wd SCT, sportsman 2wd SCT, and 4x4 SCT. The most competitive class was the truck class. Great racing top to bottom. This video was taken in the B-main where Skinner and Joel White battled closely for the bump up spot to the A-main. The nice thing about the open class is that there are really great battles in the A, B, and sometimes C mains. I wanted to get some video time to the lower mains. The A-main was even tighter with first and second place separated by about a second after 9 minutes of racing.

I also started taking some racer pics again this week. I'll be trying to get more and more as the weeks go on.

Friday Night Madness - Nov 5 2010

Racing has been going on every Friday night and Sunday for the past two months. Typically about 60 electric entries per event with buggy, truck , SCT, 4x4 SCT and novice. A new track was installed prior to last weeks Halloween race. The new track is quite beginner friendly with the "big" jumps designed as table top landings to make them friendly for stock SCT as well as mod buggy. The layout makes for some really tight racing every time out. Lots of fun.

Here are some videos from the mains. First up is the 2wd Buggy A-main. This was shot both from the drivers stand and an on car camera. Thanks to Kevin McCleary for the on car camera which was installed on Rodney Blacks buggy. Also, thanks to Don Goins for shooting the video from the stand. Rodney led the first 4 minutes, but a crash let Jason Longbrake by. Jason never looked back and took the win..

Second is the truck A-main. A wreck by Rodney Black on an early lap let Don Goins and Jeff Shaw pull away. Rodney was able to catch back up and take the win. Thanks to Crystal Eldridge for shooting this video.

Finally is the 2wd SCT race. Rodney Black took an early lead, but Keith Porter was able to reel him in and take the lead. The two traded positions the last few laps and this one came down to the last corner and run to the finish line. Thanks to Keith Laymon for shooting this video.

CRCRC Indoor Season has started

The winter racing season is here. CRCRC has opened it's doors for racing and is entering the second month of racing. Electric races are held Friday night and Sunday afternoon. Nitro racing is held Saturday afternoon. Check the CRCRC forums for more details.

Turn out has been good and steady for both Friday and Sunday with entries in the 60's on each race day. The nitro program is currently building and would love to see you come out to race. Further, we have had great turn outs for Wednesday electric practice.

I've been a little lax getting race reports out this season due to some projects at home taking up my time. I did record a feature race the last two Friday nights. First up is the new, growing, and always crazy 4x4 SCT class. This is the A-main from two race weekends ago. Check out the battle between Bob Eldridge, Don Goins, and others.

The feature race last Friday was the 2wd open buggy class. This is the A-main, and there was a quite full B-main of open buggy as well. Rodney and Dax battled for a bit before Dax had trouble with traffic. Though Dax was a bit faster, Rodney managed to keep pretty clean the entire 9 minutes for the win.

As the weather turns colder, expect the turn outs at CRCRC to get even better. The first track layout of the season is one of the best we have had in years, by many accounts. Don't take my word for it, come and check it out. Only a couple more race weekends to do so though, there will be a track change prior to the
Halloween Electric Trophy Race. The Halloween race is being held on Saturday this year to allow out of town attendance. This could be the biggest race in the club building in many years, I suggest you not miss it!

Ohio Electric Off Road Summer Series Wrap Up

The inaugural Ohio Electric Offroad Summer Series (OEOSS) was held from May through September 2010. A total of six Ohio off road tracks were toured in this series spanning geographically from Springfield to Medina. The series was sponsored by the mostly Ohio based companies X-Factory, B-Fast RC, JGB RC, and Team Terribles. Please check out the sponsor sites to find out more about their products

The series had over 125 distinct participants and over 380 entries throughout the six events. Nine racers attended all six events and received the maximum 12 bonus points for attendance. Special thanks goes out to those racers for their support of the series including: Brandon Marsh, Doug Lightcap, Chuck Kilbarger, Rodney Black, Ty Upton, Taco, Josh Howell, Ron Mick, and Dave Bergoch. About forty racers attended at least four events in their respective classes, and with two possible drops, those racers allowed themselves to be in the running for the series championship.

Round 1 was held at Hidden Springs Raceway in Springfield, Ohio. A new 1/10th scale track was installed beside the larger 1/8th scale track at that facility and this was the first race on the new track. The track was a bit on the small side, and some of the jumps were unpredictable, but everyone had a great time at this kickoff event. The Hidden Springs guys did a great job hosting the event and making everything run smooth. There were 61 entries at this event.

Round 2 was held at Classic Hobbies and Raceway in Akron, Ohio. A new layout on this large track was installed prior to the race. The layout was great and this event had some of the closest finishes of the series. The software bug hit this event causing a few hour delay and sending the mains well into the night under the lights. Kudos to Classic for having the rental lights ready to go. This race had the highest attendance of the series with 77 entries.

Round 3 was held at Roadrunner Raceway in Newark, Ohio. This was the roughest track of the series nestled amoung the trees on the top of a hill. Some of the jumps took some massaging to get right, but ultimately it was a fun layout. A very different race experience and a lot of run to race at Roadrunner. The race went off flawlessly and there were 54 entries at this event.

Round 4 was held at Medina RC Raceway in Medina, Ohio. The northern most of the series tracks, the layout was put in by some series racers just prior to the event, and it was one of my favorite of the series. Another software glitch again sent racing into the night. Luckily the Medina track is outfitted with some pretty good lighting. Thanks to Big Steve and crew for welcoming the series to Medina. This race had 65 entries.

Round 5 was held at Dirt Hills Raceway in Marion, Ohio. This track is perhaps the nicest 1/10th scale "backyard" track you will ever find. Don takes special care to ensure the track is perfectly groomed. Thanks Don for welcoming the series to your home. This race had 55 entries.

Round 6 was held at the Columbus RC Racing Club (CRCRC) in Hilliard, Ohio. My home track, this was the only indoor race of the series. CRCRC opens in September and this was the first race of the indoor season at CRCRC. The new layout was installed by the new track crew at CRCRC this year. I'm biased, but I thought it was a great layout. This race had 70 entries.

I have to say that this series was one of the most enjoyable events I have had in RC racing. All the tracks really steped up to support this series and every event was quite enjoyable. The series allowed many racers to get a taste of the various RC venues available in Ohio and allowed the 1/10th electric racing community to shrink a little...I really enjoyed meeting many racers that I have not come in contact with before this series. Kudos to Jason Longbrake for getting the ball rolling and to Timmy for stepping up to finish out the series as series director. Unfortunately, the awards were not available for the final race and they are planned to be passed out in the coming month.

I heard a lot of positive feedback about the series and I hope it continues in the coming year. I would like to see racers from variou areas get together to plan and carry out this series. Perhaps next year's series can be discussed at the Midwest Championships in January or shortly after that. I'm sure if it happens next year it will be bigger and better and will continue to grow.

OEOSS Round 6 - CRCRC Hilliard, Ohio

The sixth and final round of the Ohio Electric Off Road Summer Series was held at my home track CRCRC in Hilliard Ohio. Unlike all the other tracks, CRCRC is an indoor only facility that runs from September through May. The OEOSS race was the first race of the 2010/11 season at CRCRC so it was a brand new fresh track. CRCRC is under "new" management this year and this was the first track build at CRCRC for the new group, luckily there is plenty of track building experience in the new group and the track turned out great.

The straight ran right to left on the far side away from the drivers stand. That emptied into the trickiest section of the track, a left hand turn into a double that lands in a large off camber turn to the left. That led into an off camber run ending in a single and tight 180 to the right. A short run and left hand turn led into the "dragon back" jump series. Most drivers doubled out of the end of this series, but a few buggies, SCT, and most of the 4x4 SCT tripled out. A 180 to the left led into a double double series, that was clearable by stock Slash, and required good throttle control to do fast with other vehicles. An angled run led into a step up step down turn and into a flat chicane section followed by a mini sweeper to the left and back into the straight.

There was good attendance for this race with 70 entries, including 25 2wd buggy as the biggest class. Racers from all over Ohio attended this event. Only two of the classes had solid winners coming into the event so top positions in many classes including the hotly contested 2wd Buggy class were up for grabs.

After three rounds of qualifying, the TQ's were set as follows: Brandon Marsh (2wd Buggy), Brad Hackett (Truck), Ty Upton (Rookie), Rodney Black (2wd SCT), and Josh Howell (4wd SCT).

Unfortunately, I decided to burden myself with three classes, while calculating series results and taking or arranging video of the mains...that coupled with the "indoor" lighting conditions meant I didn't get a lot of pictures like I did for the outdoor races. The results of the mains can be found HERE.

2WD Buggy.

In the buggy class, leaders Dan Griffin and Brandon Marsh were close all day, while JP Richards sought to take the top position as well. JP was only able to make it to three OEOSS races otherwise he would have been right up there for the points lead. The start of the race had a pileup in the second turn allowing Dan and Brandon to break away. I was pleased to hang fairly close in third place for 4 or 5 laps before JP got back around me after early trouble. Dan, JP, and Brandon raced close for a while and ended up in that order.

Rookie

Ty Upton completed his domination of the Rookie class with some consistent driving. Taco took second with Caulin Jarvis in third. Sorry, I was calculating points for the buggy class and simply missed this race with the video.

2wd Truck

Dax Madden, Brad Hackett, Trophy, and Don Goins led early and battled for most of the race. In the end it was Dax, Brad, and Don in that order.

Josh Howell was running his custom Losi Ten-T based SCT at this race. Check out his thread on RCTech about the build HERE. The conversion looked good and managed to take the TQ. Josh led for most of the race, but his battery failed at the end causing him to not make jumps and eventually stop completely. That let Steve Weber to take over the lead and the win.

CRCRC 2010/2011 Season Opening Track Layout

Well, the track is officially done tonight. I don't have the final count, but I'd estimate no less than thirty different racers had a hand in getting this track ready to go and it looks great. Thanks everyone for your hard work! CRCRC is not just one or two, but rather the entire great group of racers we have, and I believe the strength of CRCRC is that it is operated by the racer volunteers. See you at the track!

The track will soak in for a few days and then the season kickoff will be Saturday for the OEOSS final round.

OEOSS Round 5 - Dirt Hills Raceway Marion, OH

Round five (of six) of the 2010 Ohio Electric Off Road Summer Series was held at Dirt Hills Raceway in Marion, Ohio on Saturday. I came prepared for the high heat, and that proved true for half the day. I did not come prepared for epic rain, which caused a several hour delay in the middle of the day. To the racers credit, very few racers left. To the tracks credit, it stayed in nice shape (though a little muddy at first). The lights that Don installed there were also handy as the last races finished around 11 PM. It was another great race in this series, we have not had a appointment yet and that is a testament to the nice summer tracks we have here in Ohio.

The track is located in the "backyard" of Don Goins. Don holds about one race a month in the summer and they are always well attended. Don meticulously cares for his track. He made a few tweaks adding a couple jumps to the layout for this race. Here's a picture taken from Don's RC Airplane!

BigDog shows off the pop bottle mud shields on his 4x4 Slash. Many racers added that mod or some plastic bag undertrays for the SCT run immediately after the storm. SCT's make good mops, especially 4x4's. I think the buggy guys were appreciative.

Racing started early at about 11:45 and made it through 1.5 rounds before a torrential downpour came upon us. Racers hunkered down under their lowered EZ ups as it passed and then waited out the drying process. At about 4PM, the decision was made to carry on with the rest of round 2 (the SCT classes). It was not really a useful round as the cars loaded up with mud and were quite slow, but the SCT guys braved the mud to help clear off the track. The two heats of SCT's left were enough to get the track decent (though still a little muddy). Round 3 started after a resort and may of the TQ's for the days were set in round 3.

After 3 rounds the TQ's were set as follows:
2wd Buggy: Brandon Marsh (Losi XXX-CR)
Truck: Paul Sinclair (X Factory X-60)
Rookie: Levi Goins (Associated SC-10)
2wd SCT: Rodney Black (Kyosho Ultima SC)
4wd SCT: Louie Weber (Traxxas Slash 4x4)

...so all the major manufacturers were represented in the TQ list.

The mains started as the sun went down. As usual for the OEOSS, all mains including B-mains were 9 minutes long. The track was good to go by the mains.

2wd Buggy

Dan Griffin passed Brandon Marsh for the lead by going triple single over the quad while Marsh went double double...but the race was halted due to a scoring problem after one lap. Take two, Griffin passed Marsh for the lead by going triple single over the quad while Marsh went double double. Dan held on for the lead and the win by a comfortable margin followed by Marsh and Paul Sinclair.

Close race in the first half of the race for the top six with lots of lead changes. In the end, Brandon Marsh held on for the win ahead of Paul Sinclair. I had lots of fun in this race. Worth a watch.

Point series leader Ty Upton had his hands full with track local Levi Goins. Ty held the lead taking conservative but clean lines throughout the race, but Levi was able to get it together to pull ahead for the lead at the end. Great racing guys.

OEOSS Round 4 - Medina RC Raceway Medina, Ohio

The fourth round of the six race Ohio Electric OffRoad Summer Series (OEOSS) was held Saturday 31 July at Medina RC Raceway in Medina, Ohio. The Medina RC Raceway is a very nice outdoor facility located in a public park. It was just over a two hour drive from my home in west Columbus. I had been there once before early in the 2009 season, but never to run 1/10th scale.

A new layout was put in for this race by some of the local racers and they did an excellent job. The track had features in every section, many of which were fun to navigate and made for interesting racing with multiple race lines. The straight was right in front of the drivers stand and was wide enough that racers could really lay into it without regard. That led to a high speed turn to the right and a low double jump that was easy to float over at speed, but a check up before the jump could lead to trouble. Another turn to the right led to a series of large double jumps. Because of the distance away from the drivers stand, getting these two jumps lined up just right was critical to consistent laps. That led to a jump up into an elevated turn that had to be taken as a roller for the fastest line back down the hill to the right. A jog around the to left led into a step up and down around a hill to the right, and around a right hand turn to the "M" jumps. These were probably my favorite part of the track. The section was two left hand turns with about 10 yards between them. Going into the first was an angled jump that could be used as a bank if the first corner was taken tight. The V part of the M could be taken at speed as a little table top jump, and similarly the left hand leg of the M could be used as a bank if the second turn was taken tight. Misjudge any of these and the car ended up outside of the fast line. That led into another unique 180 turn that had a long set of double jumps running through it. The first ran right through the end of the tube and the second about 2 feet back. Therefore, the second jump could be used as a bank to get you around the obstacle, but again, misjudging it lost about a second. That led into a tricky to take fast sharp left hand turn into a short straight and into the rhythm section. The rhythm section was a standard double into a set of dragonback type jumps (tabletops with a kicker at the end) and a single at the end. There were multiple lines through this depending on the vehicle and the power it has. That led to a 180 into the straight and the starting line. Fun track.

"Big Steve" runs the show and did a great job for this race. There was a short delay due to a computer glitch, but all in all the race was very well done. Great job Medina RC Raceway!

There were 76 entries, which has been about average for the series. As usual three rounds of rocket round qualifying was held. At the end of qualifying the top qualifiers (and recipients of 20 series points) were as follows:

I decided to spare the TQ's the agony of getting their pictures taken.

The OEOSS runs 9 minute mains in all classes and all mains. Racers in the B-main can turn in a great run and take home the full point total for the mains, so putting in good runs was important for the series racers.

2wd Buggy

As usual, 2wd Buggy class was hotly contested with sponsored drivers leading the way. TQ Brandon Marsh, Dan Griffin, Doug Lightcap, and Paul Sinclair pulled away from the rest of the pack early and traded the lead several times. In the end, Brandon regained the lead with Dan Griffin close behind.

I only have the first half of this race due to battery issues with my camera.

2wd Truck
Paul Sinclair took his TQ position to victory. I'm not sure what happened at the start of the race as I stupidly broke on the practice lap and was busy working on my truck. When I arrived, it was Paul, Brandon, Trophy, and Rudi competing for the lead. Paul eventually ran away for a comfortable win.

2wd SCT
Brandon Marsh, Rod Schumann and Rodney Black took out away from the pack at the start, each leading at some point. By this time, the sun had set and the back of the track with the large double doubles were getting difficult to see, and consistent laps were more difficult. After trading the lead a few times, Black managed to grab the lead and put some comfortable distance between Schumann and Marsh. Schumann made a late charge to make the last lap quite close, but Black was able to hold on.

I understand a lot of the track work was put in by the leaders in this class. Josh Howell pulled away early and went on for a comfortable win. Louie Weber, Steve Weber and Timmy battled early for second, but eventually spaced out. Louie made a late charge by turning in some fast laps while Josh went into conservative mode, but was unable to catch Josh.

All of the OEOSS races have been my favorite racing experiences this summer and this race ranked up their with the best of them. It was certainly worth the drive up north. I want to thank everyone for coming out and hope to see big crowds at the final two races. Even if you haven't attended series races to date, its still a great opportunity to come out and compete with some of the best in Ohio. The next race is not too far away, in two weeks at Dirt Hills Raceway in Marion Ohio. Maybe the most "centrally located" of all the race locations in the series, it should have a good turnout.

OEOSS Round 3 - Newark Ohio 10 July 2010

The third round of the Ohio Electric Off-Road Summer Series (OEOSS)was held 10 July 2010 at Roadrunner RC Raceway in Newark, Ohio. The Roadrunner guys installed a new layout the week before, despite the rain leading up to the event. The Roadrunner track is located in a wooded area on top of a hill. The track itself slopes toward the drivers stand. The straight in front of the drivers stand had a jump about 3/4 the way down, and drivers could get some long air there if they so wished. That led into a banked turn leading into a S turn followed immediately by a small double jump. Immediately after the double landing was a 180 into a tricky single-single-double section that felt like it should be faster than it was. Drivers who tried to take it too fast usually ended up on their lids. Following that was a small keyhole turn to the right over few bumps and around a small downhill sweeper. That led into a tricky triple double. The lip of the first double got some maintenance about halfway through practice and by race time it was a fairly fun section, though still tricky to clear consistently. That led into a 180 to the left and an uphill S turn before the starting line and a downhill sweeper into the straight. In the picture below, the drivers stand is in the shadows at the top.

This round of the series had a good turnout at over 60 entries, and racing was competitive. Qualifying started at 12:30 and ran smoothly throughout. The mains were over by 7:30 in plenty of time to take advantage of the daylight. Roadrunner does not host a lot of big races, but they did a great job, thanks Roadrunner for your hard work!

2WD Buggy
Unlike the very close races of the first two rounds, this time JP Richards quickly pulled away from the pack by consistently putting down laps nearly a second faster than the competition for the first half of the race. Behind JP, Dan Griffin, Paul Sinclair, and Brandon Marsh battled for second, though Brandon fell out due to mechanical problems. The race order ended up as JP, Dan, and Paul...who happen to be the winners of rounds 3, 2, and 1 respectively. Without doing the detailed calculations and assuming 1 drop, that should put Dan Griffin in the series lead followed closely by JP, Paul, and Brandon. With two possible drops, it's still up for the taking.

2wd Truck

Like Buggy, the TQ Brandon Marsh pulled away from the pack early and won by a large margin. There was a pretty good race for second place between Trophy, Rodney Black, and Jeff Switzer(T4)for most of the race. Those three ended the nine minute race within two seconds of each other with the final order being Marsh/Switzer/Black/Trophy. Brandon has a commanding lead in this class with three strong showings. After some trouble in the main for this race, Paul Sinclair still has two strong finishes and is well positioned to compete with Brandon for the series lead. Jeff S and Trophy also have two strong finishes in the books, and can compete for the series win in upcoming rounds.

Jeff Switzer and Ron Gereshenski battled for most of the race. Toward the end, Jeff had captured a good sized lead, but a late crash led to a couple lead changes. A very nice pass off of the strait away jump by Jeff led to the victory. Unfortunately I dropped the ball and did not get video for this one. Sorry.

2wd SCT

Rod Schumann led this one wire to wire to take home the full 100 points. He was followed by Rodney in second a ways back. Keith Porter (Ultima SC) moved up a position to take third. It's shaping up to be a battle between Rod S and Rod B for the series lead in this class.

Josh Howell, Steve Weber, and Louie Weber battled for the lead for most of the race. In the end, Steve was able to drive a clean last half of the race and take the win over Josh. That's Steve's second series win in a row, but Josh likely still holds the series lead after 1 drop. Louie is still in striking distance.

Pine Drive Saturday Night Race 3 July

Just a quick update. Brent installed a new layout at Pine Drive this weekend. After last weekends short race due to a couple downpours of rain, this weekend was a make up race. A good crowd had all the usual classes going.

OEOSS Round 2 - Classic Hobbies Raceway - Akron, OH

The Ohio Electric Off-road Summer Series Round 2 was held Saturday 19 June 2010 at Classic RC Raceways in Akron, Ohio. Great weather, a nice crowd, new well-groomed track layout, helped make this race a success. Some early computer glitches extended the day a bit, but that also allowed the mains to be run under the lights for a bit of added excitement. The 2wd buggy and truck mains were especially entertaining.

The mains start as the sun sets

The track layout was put in fresh for this race by the Classic RC Raceways crew. From the long straight, a right keyhole turn led into a left keyhole turn with a few bumps dispersed throughout. A small chicane could be taken straight through accelerating into a tricky tabletop right turn. A dogleg to the right led into the "sixpack" set of three consecutive double jumps that had to be timed just right. That led into a high kicking tabletop jump into a short straight and a 180 right hand turn. Over a few bumps turned right into a set of three stepdowns with a sharp right hand turn at the end. Over a set of three roller bumps to the left side of the track leading into a large jump onto a large elevated tabletop turn back into the straight. The track layout did not have any single elements that were difficult to run consistently and was a nice layout for racing.

Qualifying
Three rounds of "rocket round" qualifying were run. There was a little controversy in the 2wd buggy class which ran first. The first heat had a great track due to the watering between rounds. The second heat was okay and by the third round the track was nearly completely dry. That being said, the really fast guys worked their way into the A-qualifier for the third round and got a chance to grab the TQ at that time. In the end, Losi driver Brandon Marsh held on the the TQ position and the 20 series points that come with it. Brandon followed that up by capturing TQ in stadium truck class as well.

In SCT, Rodney Black won all three rounds to take the TQ in 2wd (I'll spare you my ugly mug) and Bill Shay took the TQ in 4wd.

Mains

The main races started at about 8:30 PM, which was not a problem as the track at Classic is well lit and running under the lights adds a little excitement to the event. Not to mention the track stays a little moist which makes for better racing all around.

2wd Buggy
2wd buggy was up first and it did not disappoint. The buggy class was one of the largest and was chalked full of excellent racers. In the B-main, a lengthy battle between Rudi Johnson, Rod Schumann and Jason Markovich got the crowds warmed up with some tight racing and nice passes. In the A-main, an early bump between then leaders Jason Switzer and Brandon Marsh allowed Eric Clark, Dan Griffin and Paul Sinclair to get a small breakout. Eric eventually yielded to Dan and Paul who battled closely for most of the race. In the end, the two were only separated by less than a tenth of a second. I highly recommend watching the video of this race.

From a series perspective, in his first series race, Dan Griffin pulled in a solid 97 point performance. First round leader Marsh pulled in the TQ but struggled in the main, while second place Sinclair pulled in 92 points with a nice main finish. At his first event Eric Clark was solid in both qualifying and the main for a 96 point total. With one drop, Marsh, Griffin, Sinclair, and Clark along with Luke and JP Richards from the first round are all within a few points of each other for the points lead, while Sinclair takes the two race lead with two solid finishes.

Rookie
As mentioned previously, the Rookie class TQ had to leave early leaving Noah Stricker to lead them out of the gate. In the end, round 1 winner Ty Upton took the main win.

TQ Brandon Marsh, Jeff Switzer, and Paul Sinclair put some distance between them and the pack in the first few minutes. Half way through Marsh and Switzer traded a couple straightaway passes, the second leading to some trouble that allowed Sinclair to get back in range. The last few minutes saw a good battle between Marsh and Sinclair with Sinclair putting on a strong late charge that came down the the next to last turn. I also know first hand that there was a good 4-way battle at the back of the lead lap for most of the race between Black, Bean, Gereshenski, and Trzcinski.

For the series, both Marsh and Sinclair backed up their round 1 leads with solid second round performance.

TQ Rodney Black led wire to wire and was able to pull away due to close racing behind him. For the series, Black has secured 100 points in each of the first two rounds for a solid start.

Anybody that says these things do not look like fun is kidding themselves. TQ Bill Shay led Steve Weber, Josh Howell and Louie Weber away from the rest of the pack early. Bill took off to a substantial lead before getting into trouble with backmarkers and running into mechanical troubles. That led to a close battle between Weber, Weber, and Howell for a while before Steve Weber pulled away for the victory.

For the series, Howell backed up the round 1 sweep with a solid second round performance while Steve Weber turns in a solid start. Should be a close battle for the series.
